How to Choose the Right Pad

Choose an Absorbancy

Pads come with 2 layers of Hemp for a soaker. This is good for the majority of women during their menstrual flow. For heavier overnights or postpartum you can choose to have an extra layer of soaker added in when ordering Customs. As your flow lightens you can switch to the Ashera Thin Liners. They have 1 layer of soaker and are good for when you are still bleeding but find you could go longer than 4 hours before changing the pad. This is when you'd switch to the Thin Liners. Then there is the Ashera Ultra Thin Liner which has no soaker in it. This is good at the very end of a cycle where you are doing more spotting than actual flow and for every day use and for backup for menstrual cups.

All pads and liners can be used for urinary incontinence. For light leaks go with a Thin or Ultra Thin Liner.

Choose a Length

If you currently use an 8" pad you most likely won't care for the extra length of a 12-14" pad. Most women find a 8-10" pad works the best. If you have a heavier flow or quick gushes you may find the length of a longer pad to suit you better for those days. The longer length can hold flow longer before it absorbs into the pad.

For overnight a 10-12" pad may suit you better if you have normal flow through the night. Some women find sleeping on their stomachs slows down, or even stops night flow. However once they wake up and gravity kicks in they can have a sudden gush.

During the Postpartum period the first 1-2 days you will want a 14" pad with the extra 3rd layer of soaker. You will bleed alot during that time and then it starts to taper off. During days 3-5 you should find that your normal AF pads will work, but you may have to change them more often. After that you should find your normal pads will work.

Choose a Style

Petite VS Regular? Petite pads are not as wide and the wings are shorter & skinnier. The width of them is skinnier than a size Large Fruit of the Loom or Hanes panty gusset. Petites are good for smaller women or teens.

Wings or no wings? Wings help a pad stay in place and you do not have to worry about holding onto the pad while pulling your panties down so it doesn't fall in the toilet. The Wings do not wick any blood onto your panties, nor do they add any bulk. Most of my customers choose pads with wings. If you are unsure about the wings there is a wingless style available.

Thongs

For women who wear thong underwear I do have a thong option. They come with or without wings. There is a picture of 1 in the Gallery. Email me @ sales@motherandmaiden.com to purchase.

Narrowing Down the Fabric Choices

  • If you are against using animal products all wool pads are out.
  • If you only want to use 100% naturally grown materials, all Minkee, Chenille, non-Hemp Fleece, Faux Suede, Hydroflex and Velour(other than Bamboo & Cotton) is out.
  • If you only want Organic pads, I have Organic Velour and soon, Organic Cotton Fleece.
  • If you do not want a PUL like backing, all Hydroflex is out.
  • If you only want prints, Flannel is the only choice.
  • If you want the softest fabric I have, Bamboo Velour or Minkee/Chenille is what you want.
  • If you want the thinnest pad possible, you want Flannel, Faux Suede or Bamboo Velour on top and Hydroflex on the bottom. A fleece bottom will still be quite thin.
  • If you want the fastest material to get the blood away then Flannel and Bamboo Velour are what you want.
  • If you want a pad that will not make you hot then you want Flannel, Cotton Velour, Organic Velour or Bamboo Velour on top and Hemp on the bottom.
  • If you have really heavy bleeding or bleeding that gushes you want Wool, Hydroflex or WindPro on the bottom.
  • How Many Should I Buy?

Most women use between 12 & 24 pads during their cycle. I suggest buying at least 12 to start. Then you will know how often you have to change them. Also alot of women find their cycle lightens up and do not use as many cloth pads per cycle as they did disposable pads. If during a cycle you are finding you have to wash all the pads because you have run out then you can purchase more.

Some people cannot afford to purchase a full cycle's worth of pads at a time. To get pads for cheaper you can do any of the following:

  • Ask if I have any current Coupon codes.
  • Purchase through a Co-op. They run a few times a year at 30% off retail prices.
  • Seconds will be on my Instock page.
  • Go to my Hyena Cart to see if I have any up there for cheaper.
